July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month and we want to shed some light on this disease that affects more than 300,000 children in America. Arthritis is commonly thought of as an “old” person disease, but in the last several decades juvenile cases have grown substantially. Raising awareness about the existence of juvenile arthritis can help parents and families who have children affected by this disease but may have not known where to go to look for answers.
Though Juvenile Arthritis is arthritis, it’s not the same as the aches and pains we sometimes feel as we get advanced in age. Children with juvenile arthritis suffer from various autoimmune forms of arthritis. Autoimmune forms of arthritis basically means that their young bodies’ immune systems are attacking their joints. This attack on the joints causes swelling, stiffness and, in many cases, can lead to permanent damage in the joint. Juvenile Arthritis is a serious condition and if left untreated can result in loss of mobility, blindness and even death in severe cases. These children need our support — their families need our support.
